
An astronomical observatory is an infrastructure designed for the observation, study and dissemination of knowledge about the cosmos and its celestial objects, such as stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae and other celestial bodies.
We can find world-class top-level observatories (we call them the great scientific observatories) located in the best places for observation on Planet Earth such as Chile, Hawaii and the Canaries, but there are other smaller infrastructures which have been designed to give the general public access to astronomy. There are a number of these latter observatories in the province of Ávila which are fitted with specialised instruments, semi-professional telescopes, cameras, spectrographs and detectors, allowing data collection and research projects on the cosmos, as well as showing the universe to astrotourists.
